Newly Renovated Long Branch Library Opens with Entertainment, Activities

Magic, music, a clown, book discussion refreshments and an official ribbon cutting marked the re-opening today of the Long Branch Library, closed since April 2000 for major interior and exterior renovations.

Among the new features are:

  • a new computer lab that can be used for classes and general public use; several computers will feature language learning software and others will have word processing capabilities that can be used for resumes and student work;

  • software that allows customers to sign up and use library computers for research, in addition to accessing library databases and the Internet;

  • a group study room and three tutoring rooms that will allow small groups to work together;

  • a large quiet study room; and

  • Express Check-Out that will allow customers to pick up materials on hold and check out on their own.

    The heating/ventilation/air-conditioning and lighting systems were replaced, resulting in a more comfortable, energy-efficient building. Some windows are operable, to allow fresh air into the building when the air-conditioning system is off.

    The library's two public meeting rooms also have been modernized.

    Joining Montgomery County Public Library officials for the opening ceremonies were County Executive Douglas M. Duncan and Council President Steve Silverman. The celebration also included music by the Silver Spring International Middle School Band, magic by Narvaez the Great, an appearance by Bubbles the Clown, children's activities and a discussion by Dr. Barbara Mujica of her book "Frida."

    "I think the Long Branch community has a library they can be proud of," said County Executive Douglas M. Duncan. "The new features and amenities included in the renovation will provide much-needed services to the residents in this area in an atmosphere conducive to learning and study."

    "We are pleased that while the library has been closed, we have been active in the community through the bookmobile and programs at various area locations," said Harriet Henderson, director of Montgomery County Public Libraries. "We're happy to be back in the library where we can bring a full range of services to the Long Branch community."

    Library Manager Irene Briggs called the opening "a very important day for Long Branch and the Long Branch Library staff who have done a tremendous job getting the facility ready for opening day.

    "I want to thank the community for their patience and understanding during the renovation period and the library staff for their labor of love in getting us ready to welcome our customers with many more services and a delightful environment."

    Located at 8800 Garland Avenue in Silver Spring, the Long Branch Library is open Monday through Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Thursday, 1 to 9 p.m.; and Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
