COUNTY LAUNCHES FLUORESCENT
BULB RECYCLING PILOT PROGRAM For Immediate Release (June 27, 1996)
Montgomery County's Division of Solid Waste Services is launching a six-
month pilot program for recycling fluorescent light bulbs used in residents'
homes.
From July through December, Montgomery County residents may bring up to
12 fluorescent bulbs to any regularly scheduled household hazardous waste
collection event. Upcoming household hazardous waste collection event include
the following dates and locations:
Sun., July 7, 1996 -- Shady Grove, Solid Waste Transfer Station
Sat., July 20, 1996 -- Briggs Chaney Park and Ride Lot
Sun., August 4, 1996 -- Shady Grove, Solid Waste Transfer Station
Sun., Sept. 1, 1996 -- Shady Grove, Solid Waste Transfer Station
Sun., Sept. 22, 1996 -- Silver Spring, County Parking Lot #2
Sun., Oct. 6, 1996 -- Shady Grove, Solid Waste Transfer Station
Sat., Oct. 19, 1996 -- Bethesda, National Institutes of Health
All collection events operate 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. By attending one of the
collection events, residents also may deliver other potentially hazardous
household products, including pesticides and poisons, solvents, motor oil,
fuels, antifreeze and corrosive cleaners. The County cannot accept any
lighting ballasts. No fluorescent bulbs will be accepted from non-
residential sources.
Fluorescent light bulbs contain mercury, a heavy metal which can be
harmful to humans and the environment if improperly disposed. Through the
pilot program, the County will capture and recycle mercury from the
fluorescent bulbs. Glass and metal components of the bulbs also will be
recycled.
