COUNTY OFFICIALS CELEBRATE
OPENING OF NEW CALDOR STORE
AND ADJACENT PARKING GARAGE For Immediate Release: August 1, 1996

Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan and other local officials
today celebrated the opening of the new Caldor department store in south
Silver Spring at ribbon-cutting festivities for both the store and the newly
constructed County parking garage adjacent to Caldor, on Kennett Street.
"I know that in the retail business they often call August the 'dog
days,'" said Duncan, "but as far as I'm concerned, the opening of this new
Caldor store marks a great day for Silver Spring. Caldor is a wonderful
newcomer to the community and we are delighted to welcome it to Montgomery
County."
Don R. Clarke, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Caldor, said, "We
are delighted to open a new store in Silver Spring. We are looking forward to
providing customers in Silver Spring and neighboring communities with a broad
and dynamic selection of merchandise at outstanding values."
Caldor's new Silver Spring store brings its number of locations in the
Washington, D.C. market to eight. Locally, Caldor employs approximately 950
employees, including 300 employees at Silver Spring. Caldor currently has 14
stores in Maryland.

"When I was growing up, my family shopped at Caldor all the time," said
Councilmember Derick Berlage. "Caldor is a great store and a welcome addition
to Silver Spring's retail renaissance."
Caldor shoppers and patrons of other south Silver Spring facilities will
be able to utilize a new 600-space public parking garage, which will be
operated by Montgomery County's Department of Public Works and Transportation.
The garage will be accessible through Kennett Street and Eastern Avenue. Free
parking will be available through August 4, during the store's grand opening
ceremonies, and on all weekends and holidays.
The $6.8 million parking garage replaces an old Silver Spring garage
demolished in March 1995. Caldor oversaw design and construction of the new
garage, although design and construction costs were funded through County-
issued parking revenue bonds.
