DUNCAN LAUNCHES "RENEW MONTGOMERY"
PROGRAM TO REPAIR INFRASTRUCTURE
IN COUNTY'S OLDER NEIGHBORHOODS For Immediate Release: Aug. 1, 1996
Many of Montgomery County's older neighborhoods will be getting a
facelift -- with newly replaced or repaired sidewalks, curbs, gutters and
storm drains and other such public works projects -- under the auspices of the
County's newly created "Renew Montgomery" program.
County Executive Douglas M. Duncan, who originally announced the program
in his capital budget presentation last January, joined public works crews
today in the Brookmont community, near Bethesda, to launch the first of the
nine neighborhood infrastructure improvement projects scheduled for fiscal
year 1997.
"Our community is not only growing, it is maturing," said Duncan. "The
aim of the Renew Montgomery program is to deal with the needs which result
from that maturity -- to focus on rebuilding and refurbishing the
infrastructure of our older neighborhoods. The great quality of life we enjoy
in Montgomery County starts with quality neighborhoods. Projects such as
these are an investment in the preservation of that quality."
Earlier this year, Duncan recommended and the County Council approved an
additional $2.2 million in funding for these types of projects in FY 97, and
an additional $11 million over the course of the six-year Capital Improvements
Program.

DUNCAN LAUNCHES "RENEW MONTGOMERY" 2-2-2
"Renew Montgomery is a coordinated and focused effort to address the
backlog of infrastructure repair needs in our older neighborhoods," said
Graham Norton, Director of the Department of Public Works and Transportation.
"This program will provide these communities with much-needed and long-awaited
services."
The primary consideration in selecting neighborhoods for the Renew
Montgomery program was the condition of the infrastructure. Safety issues and
community concerns were also considered. Other neighborhoods scheduled for
improvement in this year's budget are Connecticut Avenue Estates and Veirs
Mill Village in Wheaton; East Silver Spring; East Bethesda; Woodside Park in
Silver Spring; Bannockburn in Bethesda; Longbranch in the East Silver Spring-
Takoma Park area; and Tamarack Triangle in Colesville.
Renovations in Brookmont, where today's kickoff took place, will include
curb, gutter and storm drain construction and replacement, as well as paved
road repairs and some tree maintenance. Major road improvements are also
planned, including asphalt resurfacing and traffic calming measures. The goal
of these improvements is to assure effective, safe, and attractive vehicular
and pedestrian access to business districts, public facilities, and
recreational opportunities.
