RIDE ON TO BEGIN ACCEPTING RAIL
TO BUS TRANSFERS AT SHADY GROVE For Immediate Release: Sept. 6, 1996

In an effort to ease commuting costs and increase transit ridership,
Ride On buses operating from the Shady Grove Metro Station will begin
accepting rail to bus transfers, effective September 15. As a result,
commuters will be able to ride free on Ride On if they show the bus operator a
transfer ticket from their originating Metro station. The regular Ride On
fare is $1.10 during weekday rush hours and 90 cents at all other times.
This special offer is available only at the Shady Grove Metro Station
for riders transferring from rail to Ride On. The offer will run through June
27, 1997.
The ridership incentive program being jointly implemented by Montgomery
County and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) is being
funded by the Maryland Department of Transportation.
"We are pleased to fund this program as part of our ongoing efforts to
help reduce traffic congestion and increase transit ridership in the region,"
said Maryland Transportation Secretary David L. Winstead.
The program is similar to Metro's offer of free or reduced fare commute
trips on several bus routes on Metrobus and on bus systems in northern
Virginia. For Metrorail and Ride On commuters in Montgomery County, this test
program offers commuters a financial incentive to use mass transit at a
reduced cost.
