COUNTY OFFERS TIPS ON FLOODING;
LOCALIZED FLOODING EXPECTED AS
TROPICAL STORM FRAN NEARS For Immediate Release: September 6, 1996
The National Weather Service has issued a "Flash Flood Watch" for
Montgomery County, effective now through late this evening, as Tropical Storm
Fran continues its northwest track. Weather forecasters say that Montgomery
County could receive as much as two to four inches of rain within the next 24
hours. With the heavy rain, flooding is expected and residents in low-lying
areas are urged to closely monitor news reports on the storm.
The Montgomery County Division of Emergency Management and the Maryland
Emergency Management Agency offer the following tips in dealing with flood
conditions:
o Don't drive through flooded areas (two feet of moving water or less
will carry away most automobiles). Be prepared for washed out roadways
and/or bridges.
o Seek higher ground if your vehicle stalls in a flooded area.
o Don't walk through flowing water. Even small stream can be dangerous.
o Stay away from downed power lines and electrical wires. Report all
downed power lines to the appropriate utility company.
o Residents living in areas prone to flooding should move furniture and
valuables to higher areas in the home.
o Tie down -- or bring inside -- trash cans, recycling boxes and other
items outside the home that could be washed or blown away.
