WATERSHED TOWN MEETING
TO ADDRESS WATER QUALITY ISSUES For Immediate Release: Sept. 9, 1996
Residents can learn about the health of local waterways and what they
can do to help promote clean water at a Watershed Town Meeting on Saturday,
September 21, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Natcher Center on the NIH campus in
Bethesda.
The morning session will focus on The County's Diverse Watersheds --
Sensitive, Impacted, Highly Urban and Agricultural. An afternoon panel
featuring public officials, watershed experts and business and community
leaders will include a dialogue with the audience. Topics will focus on the
Key Issues Toward Better Management of County Watersheds -- Public Education
and Involvement, Watershed Protection Priorities and Financing.
There will be hands-on activities, featuring the County's Stream Teams,
which will highlight local environmental education programs and various ex-
hibits depicting successful citizen-based watershed activities. Residents can
also learn how to become watershed stewards.
"Our local watersheds are not only the source of our drinking water,
they enrich our lives in ways we don't even realize," said Ginny Barnes, who
chairs the County's Water Quality Advisory Group. "We all live in a watershed
and the Town Meeting offers citizens an opportunity to learn about and speak
for their own local streams."
The Watershed Town Meeting follows up on water quality issues introduced
