MENTORING CONFERENCE
SET FOR OCTOBER 23 For Immediate Release: October 4, 1996
Care givers, members of mentoring groups and other individuals
interested in helping to ensure a positive future for local youth are invited
to attend the County's fifth annual Mentoring Conference, "Making a
Difference," to be held October 19, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Holiday Park
Senior Center in Wheaton.
Workshops will be offered on "Building A Meaningful Relationship" and
"Organizing Successful Mentor Programs." The opening session will focus on
"The Task Force as an Umbrella Organization," and the event will close with
"Networking as a Resource Channel." A copy of A Directory of Mentoring
Programs, produced by the Montgomery County Task Force on Mentoring, will also
will be available.
Keynote speaker will be Rev. Lon Dring, executive director of Community
Ministry of Montgomery County. County Executive Douglas M. Duncan and County
Councilmembers Marilyn Praisner and Isiah Leggett will open the conference.
Sponsored by the Montgomery County Human Relations Commission and the
Mentoring Task Force, the free conference also helps mark October as
Mentoring Month, which was proclaimed jointly by the County Executive and the
County Council.
Human Relations Commission Executive Director Odessa Shannon said,
"Mentoring in our community is an investment in our youth that has already

helped them become interested in community leadership and encourages them to
seek higher education in exciting new fields and professions."
The Task Force, formed in 1991, is a networking group of volunteers
which focuses on developing, improving, and expanding mentor programs in the
County. The group also assists communities in identifying specific mentoring
needs.
