SUNDOWN ROAD BRIDGE COMPLETED
THREE MONTHS AHEAD OF SCHEDULE For Immediate Release: Oct. 4, 1996

Montgomery County's Department of Public Works and Transportation
recently completed the construction of a replacement bridge on Sundown Road,
east of Laytonsville, over the Hawlings River. The new, two-lane structure
opened to traffic on September 20, three months ahead of schedule.
The replacement bridge retains the roadway capacity of 15,000 vehicles
per day and the structure does not require load restrictions. The old
structure was posted with a three-ton weight restriction.
The actual construction cost of $540,000 was $315,000 lower than what
was budgeted for the project, according to Public Works and Transportation
officials. Eighty percent of the construction costs are being reimbursed by
federal funds.
"Three months ahead of schedule and more than $300,000 under cost
projections -- needless to say, we are very proud of this project," said
Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan. "Most importantly, this bridge
is a major safety improvement for those who travel along this road."
The County's Sundown Road bridge replacement project was coordinated
with the State and Federal Highway Administrations for federal funding, and
the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission to reduce the
impact on the adjacent parkland.
