RECIPIENTS HONORED AT COUNTY'S
THIRD ENERGY AWARDS CEREMONY       For Immediate Release:  Oct. 17, 1996



     Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan and County Council member Neal
Potter today joined the County's Energy Conservation and Air Quality Advisory
Committee in honoring businesses and public institutions for their contributions to
the advancement of energy efficiency and improved air quality in Montgomery County.
     At a ceremony in Rockville to announce the recipients of the third annual
Montgomery County Energy Awards, Duncan and Potter paid tribute to the 1996 honorees
and proclaimed October as Energy Awareness Month in Montgomery County.
     This year's awards included six "best-in-category" presentations and four
honorable mentions.  Best-in-category winners included:
          Residential Multifamily Units:  Summit Hills Apartments in Silver
Spring for renovating 1122 units with energy efficient lighting and new windows.
          Institutional:  Carter Engineering for the design and installation of
the thermal storage system at the National 4-H Center in Chevy Chase.
          Commercial:  Potomac Electric Power Company (PEPCO) for its Early
Chiller Retirement program, which offers rebates to customers for the replacement of
existing cooling equipment with high efficiency chillers.
          Government Facilities:  Division of Facilities and Services of the
County's Department of Public Works and Transportation, for renovation and new
construction at the Germantown Police Station.
          Education:  Commuter Services Section, Division of Transit Services of
the County's Department of Public Works and Transportation, for its summertime air
quality awareness program.

          Transportation:  Division of Transit Services of the County's
Department of Public Works and Transportation, for its Code Red-Ride Free program
through the Ride-On bus system.
     Honorable mention award recipients included the HBW Group, for the energy
savings and environmental benefits realized through the retrofit of the Exchange
Building in Rockville; Spaulding & Slye, for its retrofit of the Air Rights Center
in Bethesda; the U.S. Department of Energy, for its retrofit of the Germantown
Headquarters Building; PEPCO, for its participating in the U.S. Environmental
Protection Administration's Green Lights Program at PEPCO's Rockville Service
Center.
