HONOREES NAMED IN 10TH ANNUAL
KEEP MONTGOMERY BEAUTIFUL AWARDS   For Immediate Release:  Oct. 28, 1996



     Twenty-seven private and public facilities in Montgomery County --
including everything from shopping centers to gas stations, and water towers
to condominium communities -- are this year's honorees in the Keep Montgomery
County Beautiful task force's 10th annual outdoor beautification contest.
     The contest recognizes outstanding landscaping and beautification
efforts in seven categories, including:  commercial retail, cityscape/
municipal street planting, public institution, community projects designed and
maintained by professional landscapers and/or contractors, community projects
designed and maintained by non-professionals, environmental/wildlife habitat,
and a sustained maintenance award.  Level one entries were for projects
started this year; level two entries recognized were for maintenance or
upgrades of projects from prior years.
     Eight first place awards were presented this year and the honorees
included:
          Bethesda Metro Center Plaza (Commercial retail, Level II);
          Gaithersburg's Route 355 Median Strip, designed and maintained by     
     the City of Gaithersburg (Cityscape/Municipal Street Planning,
          Level I);

          Bethesda's Route 355 Median Strip, designed and maintained by the
          Bethesda Urban Partnership) (Cityscape/Municipal Street Planning,
          Level II);
          Kentlands Mansion (Public Institution, Level II);
          Carleton of Chevy Chase Condominium (Community Professional, Level
          II);
          The Gables on Tuckerman (Community Professional, Level II);
          Veirs Mill Rd. Retainer Wall/Conn. Ave. Estates (Community Non-
          professional, Level I);
          Talbot St. Water Tower-Karen Voight (Environmental--Wildlife
          Habitat, Level II);
     Second place honorees included: Wheaton Plaza; Mills House
(Gaithersburg), the City of Gaithersburg's Summit Hall Farm Park Miniature
Golf Course; The Colony at Germantown; and The Forum (Tuckerman Station
Homeowners Association).  Third place awards went to Colesville Exxon East;
Woodmont Shell; Brown Station Elementary School; the William F. Bolger Center;
Rockville City Hall; Grosvenor Park Townhouse Condominium; Strathmore
Townhomes; and Bnai Brith Homecrest House.  Honorable mentions included the
Montgomery County Conservation Corp; Gaithersburg Police Station; Whitley Park
Condominiums & Townhomes; The Promenade; and City of Rockville entrance sign
on Veirs Mill Rd.
     Also honored at this week's Keep Montgomery County Beautiful awards
ceremony were the winners of the group's 1996 photography contest.  First

place award winners included Philip Jones of Gaithersburg, Jeff Felder of
Bethesda, Judy Gross of Gaithersburg, George B. Troup of Silver Spring, and
Linda Sobel Katz of Silver Spring.  Second place honorees included Michael
Harrison of Silver Spring, Jessie Sackett of Bethesda, Andrea Dagmar Brown of
Chevy Chase, Ellen Slaughter of Silver Spring, and Gay Reilly of Silver
Spring.  Third place awards went to Jeffrey Griffiths of Poolesville, Casey
Hristakos of Bethesda, and Ruth Oltman Bruner of Gaithersburg.  Honorable
mention recipients included Chris Stillion of Rockville, G. Frederick Stork of
Chevy Chase, Barbara Kloc of Bethesda, and Gay Reilly of Silver Spring.
