DUNCAN PRAISES CITIZEN
HEROES; FIVE SAVED FROM
AUTO FIRE For Immediate Release: November 1, 1996
Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan today praised two citizens
who rescued five occupants from a car fire yesterday evening after the vehicle
struck a tree on Waters Road in Germantown.
Sean Bailey, 33, of Germantown and an unknown U.S. Postal employee came
upon the 6 p.m. accident and pulled the female driver and four teenagers from
the burning auto prior to the arrival of fire and rescue units. According to
fire officials who arrived shortly after the individuals were freed from the
wreckage, the fire had already entered the passenger compartment.
"Fortunately, these two individuals quickly realized that someone had to
do something fast, and they were willing to put their own lives in jeopardy to
help others," said Duncan. "Mr. Bailey and the individual who assisted him
are indeed heroes in every sense of the word."
Duncan phoned Bailey late today to inquire about his well-being and to
commend him for his actions. Bailey was treated for an injury sustained during
the rescue effort.
Bailey, and all five occupants of the auto, were transported by rescue
units to local hospitals for treatment. With the exception of the driver of
the vehicle, all have been released.
