"USE LESS STUFF" DAY
COMING ON NOVEMBER 21;
COUNTY OFFERS FREE GUIDE
PROMOTING REUSE OF MATERIALS For Immediate Release: November 13, 1996
It's time to prepare the feast, deck the halls, shop for holiday gifts
and wrap them. But, Montgomery County residents are encouraged to do all this
using less stuff.
On November 21, the County will join more than 75 groups around the
country to celebrate the Second Annual ULS (Use Less Stuff) Day. The Thursday
before Thanksgiving was selected because it kicks off the high-waste holiday
season. During the five weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas, it is
estimated that the nation's trash volume increases by a million tons per week!
"Rentals may be the perfect solution for holiday parties," says Susanne
Brunhart, manager of the County's Master Recycler/Composter Volunteer Program.
She also suggests going to consignment and thrift shops to look for unusual
and one-of-a-kind gifts.
To help residents use less stuff, the County's Department of
Environmental Protection has published a revised version of its guide to waste
prevention entitled "Use It Again, Montgomery County."
The free guide lists businesses and non-profit organizations that
repair, rent or reuse goods. Repairing helps avoid making new purchases,

which reduces product packaging and, eventually, the amount of materials that
wind up in the trash.
Another free guide -- "Don't Let Your Holidays Go to Waste" -- published
by the ULS Report, contains facts and tips on how to celebrate the holidays
and use less stuff.
To receive either or both of the publications, call the County's
Recycling Hotline at 301-590-0046, weekdays from 1 to 4 p.m.
