CHRISTMAS TREE RECYCLING
SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED For Immediate Release: Dec. 18, 1996

Montgomery County residents with blue bin recycling service may put
their Christmas trees out for curbside pickup -- with their other recyclables
-- from December 26 through January 31. Trees -- and all recyclables -- must
be placed at the curb by 7 a.m.
Because Christmas trees will be chipped and used in the County's free
mulch give-away program, they must be in a natural state to be collected.
Metal stands and all decorations -- including lights, ornaments, tinsel and
garlands -- must be removed. Trees should not be placed in plastic bags.
Live Christmas trees with root balls, and artificial trees will not be
collected.
Condominium and multi-family dwelling unit residents should check with
their property managers or representatives for specific recycling
instructions.
Residents can also recycle all or part of their trees at home. Cut off
the branches and use them as a mulch blanket during the winter around the
roots of cold-sensitive or acid-loving plants, such as azaleas and
rhododendrons. Branches can also be chopped up and added to the compost pile.
The tree trunk can be used to support climbing vegetables and other climbing
vines.
For more information on recycling Christmas trees, or picking up free
mulch, call the County's recycling hotline at (301) 590-0046.
