HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION HONORS
FIRST ANNUAL AWARD RECIPIENTS FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: December 19, 1996

The Montgomery County Human Relations Commission recently bestowed its first annual
human relations awards on two County poets who have contributed much effort to eliminating
discrimination. John Smith and Davi Walders have used their poetry to address the issue of human
rights and cultural diversity through an innovative and interactive "Fellowship through the Arts"
program, and they have contributed individually through other programs.
Smith spearheaded a mentoring program that has since expanded to include a directory of
available programs and an annual training session for organizations and individuals interested in
mentoring young people.
Walders works with the Crisis Shelter to help victims of domestic abuse, and with the
National Institutes of Health to help parents of children who are HIV positive. She has also
provided an annual recognition of two County high school students in honor of her parents. That
program is being expanded by the Commission to provide recognition to a student in each of the
County's high schools.
