COUNTY ANNOUNCES
OZONE AND AIR QUALITY LECTURE For Immediate Release: July 2, 1996
A free public lecture and discussion on ground level ozone, its impact
and consequences, will be held on July 10, beginning at 7 p.m., at the
Agricultural History Farm Park, 18410 Muncaster Road in Derwood.
The DEP "Ozone and Air Quality" lecture will be led by Bernie Bloom, an
engineer and air quality specialist for the County's Department of
Environmental Protection, and a recognized policy leader and educator in the
field of ozone pollution and pollution mitigation. The lecture will also
include information on local programs and actions which residents and
businesses can undertake to address this escalating threat to human health and
the long-term health of and quality of the environment.
Ground-level ozone or smog is a dangerous pollutant created when
temperatures are in the upper 80s and 90s and natural and man-made sources of
nitrogen oxides and Volatile Organic Compounds react in sunlight. High
concentrations of ozone can irritate the respiratory tract, resulting in
shortness of breath, coughing, headaches, nausea, and eye and throat
irritation. Ozone may also increase susceptibility to infections, allergens,
and other air pollutants, which is especially dangerous for people suffering
from respiratory problems.
