COUNTY, BROOKMONT NEIGHBORHOOD
REVIEW PROJECTS COMPLETED
UNDER "RENEW MONTGOMERY" PROGRAM For Immediate Release: April 14, 1997
Situated in the southeast portion of the County by the Potomac River, Brookmont is an
older neighborhood which has received some new life under a County program designed to
bolster aging communities.
During a walking tour held today in Brookmont, local officials saw first hand the
improvements which have been made during the past eight months under the "Renew
Montgomery" program.
Among the projects completed to date are curb gutter replacement, permanent
pavement repairs, roadway resurfacing, tree maintenance, and installation of a new traffic
island at the intersection of Maryland Avenue and Broad Street.
When all repairs are completed, the County will have performed approximately
$500,000 worth of repairs in the Brookmont community, which dates back to the 1920s.
Among those participating in the tour were County Executive Douglas M. Duncan,
Robert Merryman, deputy director of the Department of Public Works and Transportation
(DPWT), departmental staff, and Steve Malloch, representing the Brookmont community.

"Brookmont is a model for what we envisioned when we first talked about creating a
program that would help breed new life into our older neighborhoods," Duncan said. "Thanks
to the residents who produced a list of concerns, we were able to come in and focus our
attention on specific needs and accomplish a lot in a relatively short period of time."
Speaking on behalf of DPWT Director Graham Norton, Merryman said, "We were
able to accomplish these tasks through the coordination of the various divisions within the
department.
"I am proud of the staff dedication and commitment to this effort which has resulted
in improved infrastructure for the Brookmont community."
Another area targeted for improvements during FY 97 is the Bannockburn community
which is adjacent to Brookmont in Bethesda. Cracked, aging curbs were replaced throughout
the neighborhood bounded by River Road, Wilson Lane and Goldsboro Road.
In addition to Brookmont and Bannockburn, seven other local communities have been
designated for repairs under Renew Montgomery.
Renew Montgomery was introduced in the capital budget presented by Duncan in
January 1996. The County Council approved an additional $2.2 million in funding for these
types of projects in FY 97 and $11 million over the course of the six-year Capital
Improvements Program. Referring to the maturing of some communities in the County,
Duncan said, "The aim of Renew Montgomery is to deal with the infrastructure needs which
result from that maturity. "
