HAZARDOUS WASTE COLLECTION
COMES TO SILVER SPRING MAY 18 For Immediate Release: May 7, 1997
Montgomery County's mobile household hazardous waste collection program is
coming to Silver Spring on Sunday, May 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. County residents may
bring their household hazardous waste products to County parking lot #2 in downtown Silver
Spring. Lot #2 is located on Spring Street, just east of Georgia Avenue, behind the Park and
Planning Commission building.
Sponsored by the County's Department of Public Works and Transportation's Division
of Solid Waste Services, the program allows residents to safely dispose of toxic, flammable
and corrosive materials they have stored in their homes.
Materials which are accepted for collection include pesticides, herbicides, oil-based
paints, paint thinners, solvents, used motor oils, antifreeze and unwanted fuels. Additional
items accepted include swimming pool chemicals, photographic chemicals, brake fluid, car
batteries, button batteries and household alkaline batteries.
Hazardous materials which are not accepted include commercial, industrial or medical
wastes, radioactive materials and asbestos.
All materials collected will be transported to and processed at a federally-approved
hazardous materials recycling or disposal facility.
