LOCAL GOLF TOURNAMENTS
TO IMPACT AREA; PERMITS
REQUIRED FOR PARKING, VENDOR
LICENSES For Immediate Release: May 9, 1997

Two professional golf tournaments -- the Kemper Open and the U.S. Open -- being
held in Montgomery County will impact traffic for local commuters in the Bethesda and
Potomac areas from June 2 through 15. The Kemper Open will be held the week of June 2 -
8 at the Tournament Players Club at Avenel in Potomac, followed by the U.S. Open at
Congressional Country Club on June 9 - 15.
Commuters travelling on major roads in the vicinity of the golf courses, including,
River Rd., Bradley Blvd., Oaklyn Dr., Persimmon Tree La., Falls Rd. and Interstate 270, are
likely to experience some congestion, especially during the weekday morning and evening
rush hours. In addition, during the week of the U.S. Open, traffic in the area of North
Rockville (Darnestown Rd., Shady Grove Rd. and Travilah Rd.) is expected to be heavier
than normal due to a satellite parking facility for the tournament to be located near the
intersection of Darnestown and Shady Grove roads.
Residents living in the area of the golf courses who wish to use their property for
parking are reminded that County zoning laws require that a temporary parking permit must
be obtained within 10 days prior to the event from the Montgomery County Department of
Permitting Services. For more information on temporary parking permits, call 301-217-6212.
