COUNTY PAYS TRIBUTE TO OUTSTANDING
INTERNATIONAL TRADE FIRMS          For Immediate Release: May 22, 1997


     Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan joined the Suburban Maryland
International Trade Association (SMITA) today in paying tribute to seven County companies
which have excelled in the international trade arena.  Sponsored by the County's Department
of Economic Development and SMITA, the event showcased the County's celebration of
World Trade Week 1997.
     "International business is becoming a decisive factor in economic growth," said
Duncan.  "Today's observance of World Trade Week provides a great opportunity to spotlight
a few of our County's remarkable companies that are aggressively expanding into international
markets.  These companies are unique, but share some very important characteristics:  focused
leadership, differentiated products and services, an entrepreneurial approach, and
top-notch workers."
     Companies receiving the County's 1997 World Trade Awards included:
          Computech, Inc. (Bethesda), which provides automated data processing
          services to the federal government and other public and private sector clients in
          the United States and worldwide.
          Dexall Biomedical Labs (Gaithersburg), a Federal Drug Administration-
          registered manufacturer of diagnostic devices and immunodiagnostic products

          for physicians, clinical laboratories and hospitals.  Its products are marketed in
          the U.S., Canada, Europe and South America, and the company is currently
          expanding its focus to Asia and the Middle East.
          International Computers and Telecommunications, Inc. (Gaithersburg),
          whose products and services include aviation and airport systems, and
          information technology and telecommunications systems.  Its major customers
          include U.S. federal agencies and the Korean Airport Construction Authority.
          Lance Bailey and Associates, Inc. (Silver Spring), an international
          architecture, urban design and planning firm which handles major projects in
          the U.S., Africa, the Caribbean and the Middle East.
          SOTAS, Inc. (Rockville), which designs, manufactures and delivers turn-key
          telecommunications test systems and measures service quality for domestic and
          international carriers.  Its markets include Canada and Korea, among other
          areas.
          TELOGY Networks, Inc. (Germantown), which develops, markets and
          supports flexible portable software-based solutions for wireless communications
          and broadband high-speed networking.  In addition to its local headquarters, the
          company maintains a European office in Germany.
          U.S./China Industrial Exchange (Bethesda), which provides market
          representation, sales and consulting services in China for major multinational

          and Fortune 500 companies.  It maintains operations in the United States,
          China and Hong Kong.
     Prior to the awards ceremony, Jack Shaw, chief executive officer of Germatown-based
Hughes Network Systems, delivered a keynote speech on global opportunities for
Montgomery County businesses.  Hughes Network Systems has grown from a small
information-technology firms to a multinational corporation which focuses on global satellite,
wireless and enterprise networks, and high technology manufacturing.
