PUBLIC FORUM SET
ON REGIONAL BUS SERVICE For Immediate Release: May 29, 1997
Residents are invited to attend a public forum on "Revitalizing the Region's Bus
Service" on June 4 at 7 p.m. in the County Council Office Building (3rd floor hearing room),
100 Maryland Avenue, Rockville.
Presented by the Regional Mobility Panel, the forum is one of a series to be held in
suburban Maryland, the District of Columbia and northern Virginia.
Citizens are asked to provide feedback on the following at the forum or in writing :
- Should there be standard fares among the bus services in the region?
- Should there be a single number to call for information about regional bus
and rail services?
-How should pubic transit services in the region be funded?
- Do regional bus services meet your needs?
- How could regional bus services be improved so they are more convenient to
use?
- How can regional bus service be improved to meet future growth (such as
service to suburban employment and retail centers, service to growing residential areas, bus

service in HOV lanes the on the beltway?
- Would it matter if bus services were provided solely by a regional operator,
by local governments, or a combination of both?
The Regional Mobility Panel, composed of elected officials community and business
leaders and citizen representatives from throughout the metropolitan area, was established by
the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority Board of Directors in February. The
panel will examine the region's Metrobus system and present recommendations on how to
deliver cost-effective, coordinated bus service to the metro region. The group is also
examining funding needs for regional transit and will propose a reliable financing mechanism
to meet those needs.
Oral presentations at the forum should not exceed three minutes. Written testimony
