DUNCAN URGES STATE HIGHWAY
ADMINISTRATION TO EXTEND
ICC STUDY COMMENT PERIOD For Immediate Release: June 5, 1997
Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan is urging the State Highway
Administration to extend -- to at least 90 days -- the time period for public comment on the
Intercounty Connector study project's Draft Environmental Impact Statement/Major
Investment Study.
In a June 4 letter to SHA Administrator Parker Williams, Duncan wrote: "It is not an
easy task to bring to resolution such a complex issue. The 40-year history of this project
bears witness to this. The time has come, however, to make a decision on our future. Such a
decision will be the most important transportation decision that most of us will ever make.
Any such decision should only be made after a thorough airing and understanding of the
many facts and issues related to this project.
"Accordingly, and to allow sufficient time for all interested parties to examine and
digest the wealth of information on this project, I am asking you to extend the projects
comment period to a minimum of at least 90 days. I feel this extra time is needed to allow
for a more thorough analysis that such a long-standing complex issue requires."
Currently, the SHA is conducting a series of public hearings to solicit input on the
ICC study. The public hearing comment period for written testimony is scheduled to close on
June 23. If County Executive Duncan's request is honored, the comment period would be
extended until at least July 10.
