WHEATON SPARKLES ON JULY 4
WITH ENTERTAINMENT,
ACTIVITIES, FIREWORKS For Immediate Release: June 9, 1997
Wheaton will sparkle again this fourth of July with the traditional fireworks and pre-show
activities.
Entertainment at Wheaton Plaza will begin at 7:30 p.m., emceed by Oldies 100 radio.
Headliners will be Del Alma, a seven-piece salsa band, and Bobby and The Believers, an 11-piece
R&B band. Children's activities at the Plaza include a moonbounce and performances by the Blue Sky
Puppet Theatre.
Activities will begin in downtown Wheaton at 6:30 p.m. in the parking lot by the clock tower
at Grandview and Ennalls avenues. The Washington Bagpipe Band will play throughout the evening
from the clocktower location.
Other acts scheduled to perform are Mariachi Vivar; soloist Joanna Elliott; juggler/comic
Barry Wood; Champion baton twirler Stephanie Dallachlesa; Young American, singers and dancers;
mime/clown Mark Jester; baton twirler Erika Jones; Acrobatic duo Elizabeth Granzow and Shawn
Furlong; dancers from the Wheaton Studio of Dance; and Barry Taylor, magician, who will also emcee
the program.
The fireworks show will begin at 9:30 p.m. (Timing of the fireworks depends upon

weather conditions.) Prime viewing locations in downtown Wheaton will be clearly marked
and musical accompaniment will be simulcast to the area.
Picnics and grills are welcome at Wheaton Plaza in the grassy plot across from Giant Food.
Parking is available at County Garage 45, between Amherst Ave. and Fern Street and at
specified areas in Wheaton Plaza. Handicapped parking will be available at the Plaza and on public
parking lots downtown, however, there will be no access to lot 13 after 7 p.m. when Reedie Drive is
closed. There will be overflow parking at the Glenmont Metro Garage, with free Ride On shuttle
service from 6 to 11 p.m. All activities are a short walk from the Wheaton Metro station.
Wheaton Sparkles is an alcohol-free event sponsored by Montgomery County, the Wheaton Urban
District, the Wheaton-Kensington Chamber of Commerce and Wheaton Plaza.
The rain date, for fireworks only, is July 6.
