NATIONAL MAIN STREET CENTER
TO PRESENT RECOMMENDATIONS
FOR FENTON STREET VILLAGE For Immediate Release: June 17, 1997

     Local residents and business persons interested in the revitalization of downtown
Silver Spring are invited to attend an upcoming presentation by the National Main Street
Center on its recommended strategies for revitalizing the Fenton Street Village area of
downtown. Sponsored by the Silver Spring Redevelopment Steering Committee, the public
meeting will be held on Monday, June 30, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., at Armory Place, 925
Wayne Avenue, Silver Spring.
     The National Main Street Center, a program of the National Trust for Historic
Preservation, has been contracted by Montgomery County to evaluate the needs and potential
of Fenton Street Village. The study is being funded by a grant from PEPCO.
     Main Street has helped communities throughout the nation conserve their most
significant economic and civic resources, as well their historic buildings, through a four-point
approach to revitalization. The Main Street approach focuses on ways to enhance the area's
physical appearance; build consensus and cooperation between business and community
groups; market the area's assets to customers, investors, new businesses and the community;
and strengthen the existing economic base, while identifying new opportunities for expansion.
     For more information, call the Silver Spring Redevelopment Office at (301) 565-7300.
TDD/TTY callers can contact the County's Office of Public Information at (301) 217-6563.
