COUNTY OFFICIALS BREAK GROUND
FOR QUINCE ORCHARD COMMUNITY LIBRARY Immediate Release: June 18, 1997
The long-awaited Quince Orchard Community Library took the first step toward
reality today when County officials broke ground for the new facility which, when completed,
will be the 22nd library in the County system.
Located at 15831 Quince Orchard Road, across from Quince Orchard High School, the
site will include a 17,620 square foot structure, along with 97 parking spaces which will be
located in the rear of the building. The library will serve the area bounded by a two-mile
radius, which includes Darnestown, North Potomac, Travilah, and part of Gaithersburg.
The structure which will be designed as a 'building in the round," will be constructed
of materials indigenous to the community -- copper, stone and brick. Architects Grimm and
Parker, P.C. of Calverton, will attempt to save as many existing trees as possible, while
adding shrubbery to enhance the exterior design.
Among the officials participating in the groundbreaking were County Executive
Douglas M. Duncan; County Councilmembers Gail Ewing, William E. Hanna, Jr., and Nancy
Dacek; Delegates Jean Cryor and Kumar Barve; State Senators Jennie Forehand and Jean
Roesser; Department of Public Libraries Acting Director Que Bronson; Quince Orchard

The Quince Orchard LAC and the local community provided input for the design of
the building to the architects. The remainder of the design team are Glassman & Associates,

Associates, (structural).
Interior features include an adult reading and reference area; children's area and
children's program room; a quiet study room; two public meeting rooms, which can be
converted to one large room; and multiple public access sites for electronic information.
The initial collection of books will include 70,000 volumes, with a capacity to expand to
100,000 volumes. The $5.1 million total construction cost includes approximately $1 million
for collection materials.
Construction is expected to begin in late summer, with an opening date planned for
fall 1998.
