HIGH SCHOOL ART EXHIBIT
DEPICTS OLD SILVER SPRING For Immediate Release: June 20, 1997

Downtown Silver Spring in the 1940s and 1950s comes to life in an art exhibition
now on display in the lobby atrium of the Lee Plaza building at 8601 Colesville Road, at the
intersection with Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring. The exhibit, which features acrylic
paintings by art students from Quince Orchard High School in Gaithersburg, will remain on
display through July.
The students used old photographs and newspaper clippings of Silver Spring scenes,
from the archives of the Lee family, as their guides for the paintings. Most of the paintings
depict a more quiescent period in the Silver Spring area, before automobiles were sleek and
gas stations automated. But some things remain the same today, such as the "acorn," which
shelters the original spring, off East-West Highway, and the Little Tavern building, which still
prevails. Many of the buildings depicted in the paintings no longer exist, such as Hahn
Shoes, Lerner Shops, Call Carl, Esso, Hudson Motor Cars, and the DGS Falkland Market.
The art students participating in this exhibition were supervised by instructor Michael
N. Pierchocinski and include: Margita Roberts, Kristin Paluchak, Jin Tae Lee, Stephanie
Wang, Tom Fisher, Kim Novick, Cindy Chen, Christine Chiang, Jonathan Berisford, Nicole
