NEWLY RESTORED HISTORIC MURAL
TO BE UNVEILED AT SILVER SPRING LIBRARY Immediate Release: June 24, 1997

The public is invited to the unveiling and rededication of the newly restored 1937 post
office mural at the Silver Spring Community Library on July 7 at noon.
Entitled The Old Tavern, the historic mural was formerly housed in the Silver Spring
Post Office on Georgia Avenue. Through the efforts of the Friends of the Silver Spring
Library, the painting by Russian artist Nicolai Cikovsky will be on indefinite loan to the
library. The mural, which is 5 feet high and 16 feet long, portrays Union soldiers reading
their mail in front of a tavern located at the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Colesville
Road.
County Executive Douglas M. Duncan and County Councilmember Gail Ewing,
County Department of Public Library officials, and representatives of the Friends of the Silver
Spring Library will participate in the ceremony.
The Silver Spring Library is located at 8901 Colesville Road. For more information
on the mural or the event, call 301-565-7689.
