POLLUTION SPOTTERS NEEDED
TO MONITOR LOCAL STREAMS For Immediate Release: July 21, 1997
Residents who want to help improve local water quality are invited to become "pipe
detectives" to assist the County's Department of Environmental Protection in locating and
identifying sources of pollution entering area streams.
Volunteers should be willing to adopt and walk stream sections, observing and
reporting any suspicious discharges from pipes or channels that occur during periods of dry
weather. No stream "clean ups" are required, and no prior experience in environmental
protection is necessary. A training session will be held in the Fall.
Streams to be monitored are located in the following watersheds:
- Cabin John (Tuckerman Lane, Seven Locks Rd., Old Georgetown Rd.,
Bradley Blvd., Bethesda and lower Rockville areas);
- Little Falls (Massachusetts Ave., MacArthur Blvd, and River Rd.)
- Northwest Branch (Georgia and New Hampshire aves., and Wheaton and
Silver Spring areas)
- Rock Creek (along Routes 28 and 355, Rockville, Garrett Park and
Kensington areas); and
- Watts Branch (Wooten Pkwy., Glen Rd. and Potomac and Rockville areas).
For more information about volunteering as a "pipe detective," call Dave Jordahl at
301-217-6328.
