COUNTY SEEKS NOMINATIONS        
FOR 1997 PYRAMID AWARDS               For Immediate Release:  July 30, 1997



     Montgomery County is seeking nominations for its 11th Annual Pyramid Awards 
which recognize private and public employers for outstanding leadership in the employment
of persons with disabilities.  The deadline for nominations is August 29.
     In the private sector, nominations are being sought in the following categories: 
            Employer of the Year -- companies with fewer than 25 employees; 25-99
          employees; 100-199 employees; and more than 200 employees.
            Supervisor of the Year -- fewer than 15 employees; and more than 15
          employees. 
            Best Integrative Employment Partnership
     In addition, four special awards -- The Virginia C. Andary Award, the Margit
Meissner Excellence in Transition Award, the Cory Moore Memorial Award, and the Kermit
Mohn Barrier-Free Design Award -- will be presented at the October 15 ceremony, which will
be hosted by County Executive Douglas M. Duncan.  
     The Virginia C. Andary Award provides financial assistance for persons with
disabilities to join or continue employment.  
     The Margit Meissner Excellence in Transition Award recognizes a professional or

volunteer who contributes to the successful transition of a Montgomery County Public School
student with disabilities.  
     The Cory Moore Memorial Award will be given to a parent who has displayed
extraordinary commitment to preparation and employment of people with disabilities.  
     The Kermit Mohn Barrier-Free Design Award will be given to a public or private
facility located in Montgomery County which has adapted its facility to meet the special
needs of people with disabilities.  
     Criteria for judging is based on written descriptions of how the nominee exceeded
legal requirements for recruitment, employment, career advancement and other special efforts
governing hiring practices and accommodations for people with disabilities. 
     The Pyramid Awards are sponsored by the Montgomery County Executive, as well as
the Department of Health and Human Services, the Office of Human Resources, the
Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities and the Commission for People with
Disabilities.
