 MENTORING CONFERENCE
TO BE HELD IN ROCKVILLE;
NORMENT AWARDS TO HONOR
OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS             For Immediate Release: October 1, 1997

     A conference on mentoring will be held on October 9 from 7 to 10 p.m. at the
Rockville United Methodist Church (in Wesley Hall), 112 West Montgomery Avenue.
     Sponsored by the Montgomery County Task Force on Mentoring, the conference will
feature awards presentations, a keynote address and concurrent workshops on starting and
strengthening mentoring programs and how to become a mentor.
     The first Hanley J. Norment Awards will be presented to the Outstanding Mentee,
Mentor and Mentoring Organization.  Presenters will be Christa Norment, wife of the late
Hanley T. Norment; Montgomery County Council Vice-President Isiah Leggett; Andrea Jolly,
director of the Montgomery County Volunteer Center and John W. Smith, chair of the
Montgomery County Task Force on Mentoring.
     The keynote address will be given by Chuck Lyons, president and CEO of the Gazette
Newspapers.
     Following the workshops, which will begin at 7:55 p.m., the program will close with a
plenary session entitled, "Where Do We Go From Here?"
