VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
TO WORK WITH VICTIMS
OF SEXUAL ASSAULT                                 For Immediate Release: February 6, 1997


     Volunteers are being sought by the Victim Assistance and Sexual Assault Program of
the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Servcies to work with sexual
assault victims and their families.
     Volunteers provide 24-hour crisis counseling and companion services to victims of
rape and sexual assault at local hospitals and police stations.  They may also provide
companion and advocacy services during legal proceedings.
     All volunteers must attend a 40-hour training program, which will cover crisis
intervention skills and specialized knowledge of the emotional, medical and legal issues that
victims face.
     Potential volunteers are being interviewed for the Spring training program.  There is a
special need for volunteers to cover day and early morning shifts.
     Volunteers must have a driver's license and immediate access to transportation.  A 12-
month commitment to the program is required.
