DUNCAN SEEKS APPLICANTS FOR
ANIMAL MATTERS HEARING BOARD          For Immediate Release (Nov. 14, 1997)


     Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan is seeking applicants to fill six
vacancies on the Montgomery County Animal Matters Hearing Board. One regular and one
alternate member vacancy must be filled by a representative of the County Veterinary Medical
Association.  Two regular and two alternate member vacancies must be filled by the general
public.  Four general public incumbents are eligible to apply for reappointment. 
     The board holds hearings to address complaints regarding animal-related nuisances and
issues any orders necessary for abatement, is responsible for hearing and determining appeals
regarding licenses that have been denied or revoked by the Department of Police, Division of
Animal Control and Humane Treatment, and makes recommendations concerning the
operation of animal control facilities in the County.  Members generally serve three-year
terms without compensation and are required to file annual financial disclosure statements.
     Members attend an average of  four meetings per month in the evenings to conduct
hearings.

County boards, committees and commissions may not serve on more than one such group at a
time.
     Duncan's appointments are subject to confirmation by the County Council. 
Applications of those selected for appointment are made public as part of the confirmation
process.
