COUNTY RECOGNIZES AT&T
FOR CONTRIBUTION TO PROMOTE
HUMANITIES AT LOCAL LEVEL For Immediate Release: February 24, 1997

Honoring a new public-private partnership, County leaders today recognized the
support of AT&T in helping to promote local humanities programs.
In a ceremony in Rockville attended by government officials and business leaders,
County Executive Douglas M. Duncan, County Councilmember William E. Hanna, Jr., and
Ron Wohl, chairman of the Montgomery County Commission on the Humanities thanked
AT&T for its $5,000 contribution. Joan Marshall, AT&T vice president and general manager
- MD & DC, represented AT&T.
According to Wohl, the money will be used "to promote the humanities throughout
Montgomery County. He cited as an example, Interages, which places senior citizens in high
school classes to discuss major issues in the classroom setting.
Hanna said, "From nine to five, people are usually engaged in their employment. But,
from close of business on, they usually enter the world of the humanities. Whether it is
going to a play, listening to a concert or reading a book. Each of these activities -- as well as
every other kind of humanities program -- is one facet in the world of communication.
"Therefore, it's especially appropriate that we are honoring a communications giant
such as AT&T for their support of the humanities in Montgomery County," he said.
