PUBLIC COMMENT SOUGHT
ON NOISE CONTROL ORDINANCE                    For Immediate Release: March 5, 1997


     Public feedback is being sought by the Montgomery County Department of
Environmental Protection (DEP) and the Noise Control Advisory Board (NCAB) on potential
changes to the County's Noise Control Ordinance.  The changes are designed to address
various noise control challenges which can impact the quality of life and working conditions
within the County and to provide equitable regulations for residents, communities and
businesses.
     Some of the factors prompting changes in the ordinance are changing demographics
(more cluster development which concentrates various populations into multiple-use areas), an
increase in the number of home-based businesses and telecommuting, and flexible schedules
that affect times when individuals work and sleep.
     These changes may create the  need to amend the existing ordinance, establishing and
regulating "quiet hours," controlling noise levels, and providing waiver provisions and
temporary exemptions.  For example, new provisions may need to be added for power garden
equipment, home auto repair and other equipment and activities.
     Anecdotal information is needed to help reflect the experiences and expectations of
