FREE CONFERENCE ON CONTRACTING
FOR MINORITY FIRMS SET FOR APRIL For Immediate Release: March 11, 1997

Local governments in the Washington metropolitan region spend more than $2 billion
annually on contracts for construction, goods and services. Business owners and employees
can learn about that market at MAXACCESS, a free conference sponsored by the
Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments and co-sponsored by several local
agencies, including Montgomery County's Department of Economic Development. The
conference will take place on April 8, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the Silver Spring
Armory, 925 Wayne Avenue, Silver Spring.
MAXACCESS gathers representatives of local government contract offices under one
roof to encourage minority businesses to look at the whole region as a market for their goods
or services. It promotes networking with the people who make the decisions -- the
contracting and purchasing officers from cities, counties, and regional authorities and
commissions. Attendees will be able to visit exhibit booths, obtain "how-to" literature,
receive a free Directory of Local Government Purchasing Personnel, participate in a question
and answer session with purchasing officers, and attend seminars, including one on how to
use the Internet to enhance business opportunities.
The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments is the association of 18 local
governments working together for a better metropolitan region.
