COUNTY'S RESOURCE RECOVERY FACILITY
HONORED WITH ENGINEERING AWARD          For Immediate Release: March 24, 1997


     The Montgomery County Resource Recovery Facility in Dickerson has been selected
as the Outstanding Civil Engineering Project for 1997 by the National Capital Section of the
American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
     The annual award "recognizes a noteworthy civil engineering project" in the
Washington metropolitan area.  The County facility was selected based on "its efforts to meet
and exceed environmental protection requirements for water and wastewater management, air
emissions, ash treatment and handling, unique waste transport via railway, and noise
controls."
     The local ASCE section called the recovery facility "a prime example of Civil
Engineering achievement."  Previous award winners include the Union Station renovation in
Washington, DC, and the Statue of Freedom restoration at the U.S. Capitol.
     Graham Norton, director of the County's Department of Public Works and
Transportation, said, "I am pleased that the Resource Recovery Facility is receiving the 
recognition it deserves as a premier municipal solid waste burning facility that uses the

energy created to generate electricity.
     "The fact that this is accomplished without adversely impacting the environment,"
Norton said, "is a testimony to the engineering skills of the facility designers."
     The award was presented at the Annual Awards Banquet on March 19 at Fort McNair
Officers' Club in Washington, DC.
