DUNCAN AND DACEK OPEN NEW
POOLESVILLE WASTE OIL RECYCLING FACILITY FOR RELEASE: March 27, 1997
A new recycling facility for used motor oil and antifreeze officially opened today as
Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan and Councilmember Nancy Dacek cut the
ceremonial ribbon and poured the first oil and antifreeze into the newly-installed holding
tanks. The tanks are located adjacent to the bulky waste drop off area at the Poolesville
Highway Services Depot, located at 19200 Jerusalem Rd.
"This facility offers a convenient and safe way to dispose of used motor oil and
antifreeze," said Duncan. "I hope that our Upcounty residents will take advantage of this new
service. They will be protecting our environment for future generations. Few people realize
that the oil from a single oil change is enough to cause an eight-acre oil slick on the
Chesapeake Bay."
"The people of Poolesville deserve a lot of the credit for making this happen," said
Dacek. "Rudy Gole first brought the need for such a facility to our attention a year ago, and
he has continued to actively support the project on behalf of For A Rural Montgomery. The
Poolesville Town Commissioners, particularly Bob Chapman, have also played a key role in
this effort. I think this is an excellent example of what can be accomplished when we all

work together, and the result is something that certainly highlights two of my top priorities:
bringing more services to the Upcounty and protecting our environment."
Starting Saturday, March 29, Montgomery County residents can dispose of up to five
gallons of household motor oil and antifreeze on each visit to the Poolesville facility, which
will be open on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the year, with the exception of holidays.
The hours are: Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sundays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The installation and
maintenance of the waste oil and antifreeze tanks is a cooperative effort between the County
and the Maryland Environmental Service.
Residents can also dispose of used motor oil and antifreeze at the Solid Waste
Transfer Station, located at 16101 Frederick Rd. in Derwood (near the intersection of Shady
Grove Rd. and Rt. 355), or at participating gas stations. Information about these sites is
available from the County's Division of Solid Waste Services, which can also provide
information about the disposal of other household wastes as well as the disposal of hazardous
wastes from businesses. Call 301-217-2770.
