GENETIC THERAPY BREAKS
GROUND FOR RESEARCH FACILITY
IN GAITHERSBURG

Genetic Therapy, Inc. (GTI), a global leader in gene therapy technology, today celebrated the groundbreaking for a 70,000 square foot building in Gaithersburg to accommodate the company's expanding research activities. Founded more than 10 years ago, GTI has earned international recognition for its leadership in gene therapy technology, developing treatments for genetic and acquired diseases not currently treatable by conventional means.

"Genetic Therapy is one of Maryland's leading private sector businesses that is creating good, family-supporting jobs that are helping make Maryland the best place to live, work and raise a family," said Governor Parris N. Glendening. "We look forward to even more growth in Maryland from this innovative company in the future."

"We welcome GTI's new facility, which represents a significant investment for future expansion in Montgomery County," said County Executive Douglas M. Duncan. "Genetic Therapy is a pioneer in the biotechnology field and has helped us attract other world-class life sciences companies."

"Genetic Therapy and its parent company Novartis have made a major commitment to life sciences innovation," said Rachel King, GTI Chief Executive Officer. "This new building will provide the state-of-the-art environment to reach our goals."

GTI currently employs 220 workers in over 100,000 square feet of laboratory and office space in Montgomery County. Montgomery County has joined with the State of Maryland and the City of Gaithersburg to support the development of this new facility.

GTI is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Novartis, based in Basle, Switzerland, and one of the world's largest corporations, with activities in pharmaceuticals, agribusiness and nutrition.
