To Sponsor Safe Driving Program For Older Drivers
Three, eight-hour safe driving programs for older motorists (age 50 or older) will be conducted in April and May at the Upcounty Regional Services Center, 12900 Middlebrook Road, Germantown.
The "55 Alive/Mature Driving Program" -- developed by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) -- is designed to teach motorists safe driving techniques. The program also covers such topics as age-related physical changes, declining perceptual skills, rules-of-the-road, local driving problems and license renewal requirements. The courses are conducted by volunteers who are recruited and trained by AARP.
Each course will be taught over a two-day period, with a minimum requirement of 12 persons registered per class. Dates and times for the classes are:
There is an $8 fee for the program, and participants who complete the two sessions will receive a certificate of completion. Most insurance companies do offer discounts to persons who complete the 55 Alive program.
Pre-registration is required by sending a check (made payable to AARP) to the Upcounty Regional Services Center, Attention Administrative Office, Suite 1000, 12900 Middlebrook Road, Germantown, MD 20874.
