SUMMER QUEST READING PROGRAM
KICKS OFF AT ASPEN HILL LIBRARY
When the final bell rings on the last day of school, many students may not be thinking about reading. Yet, studies show that students who do read during the summer maintain and even increase their academic skills.
To encourage students to read during their time off from school, the Montgomery County Department of Public Libraries each year offers Summer Quest -- a free program that combines good books with special programs and incentives from sponsors.
This year's campaign, which carries the theme "Books -- Your Transportation to Another World," kicked off today at the Aspen Hill Community Library with the help of County officials and sponsors. County Executive Douglas M. Duncan and Council President Isiah Leggett joined representatives from the Department of Public Library and Friends of the Library, plus students from Weller Road and Wheaton Woods elementary schools at special ceremonies. The following community sponsors which have helped make the program possible also were recognized: Bethesda Academy of Performing Arts (BAPA), Einstein Bros. Bagels, Gazette Newspapers, McDonald's Family Restaurant, Montgomery County Friends of the Library, Montgomery County Library Board, Frederick Keys, Kim's Karate and the Montgomery County Agricultural Fair. Summer Quest will run from June 17 through August 31.
Children entering the first grade and up can collect a reading log, coupon sheet and a list of free library programs from their nearest branch or bookmobile inn the County Library System.
Each child will set a personal reading goal for the summer and can read any book they choose. Throughout the summer, every library offers a variety of free programs, such as puppet shows, storytellers, music and science programs. Children also collect stickers throughout the summer to add to their logs.
Those reaching their goals will receive a certificate of completion, have their name published in the Gazette newspaper (with parental permission) and receive a free dessert coupon from McDonald's.
For more information on Summer Quest, call the nearest public library.
