Montgomery County Offers Tips
On Surviving the Heat

With temperatures soaring this week and storm-related power outages preventing many residents from finding air-conditioned relief, Montgomery County government is encouraging residents to take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.

The current heat wave includes temperatures of more than 100°, along with ozone levels that can be hazardous to unprotected citizens, particularly young children and the elderly who are highly susceptible to heat-related illnesses, such as heat stroke and exhaustion.

By taking the following precautions, citizens can remain safe and comfortable during the dog days of summer:

  • Stay inside, whenever possible. Be especially careful to avoid strenuous activities that can result in overexposure to the sun, such as sports or gardening.

  • Try to limit operation of gas-powered equipment. This includes cars, lawnmowers, weed trimmers and power tools. Excessive use of such equipment can worsen already dangerous ozone levels.

  • When outdoors, wear proper protection from the sun. Light-colored clothing, a hat, sunglasses, and suntan lotion are all recommended.

  • Drink plenty of water. Dehydration, cramps, exhaustion or stroke can result from not drinking enough fluids.

Knowing the symptoms of heat exposure can prevent serious heat illness from becoming life threatening. Should any of the following occur, be sure to get out of the heat, loosen any tight or heavy clothing, and drink plenty of water. If more extreme symptoms occur, seek medical attention.

  • Heat cramps: symptoms include painful muscle spasms.

  • Heat exhaustion: first signs are cool, moist, pale or flushed skin, dizziness, nausea, headache and weakness.

  • Heat stroke: the most serious sign of overexposure. Symptoms include red, hot, dry skin, weak pulse, rapid breathing, and changes in consciousness.

Montgomery County residents who feel they need assistance due to heat-related problems should call the Crisis Center at 301-315-4000. Center staff will listen to complaints and provide fans and other help for those without air conditioning. Senior citizens and people with disabilities should call 301-217-8500 for assistance.
