COUNTY'S RESOURCE RECOVERY FACILITY
RECOGNIZED WITH NATIONAL AWARD
The Montgomery County Division of Solid Waste Services/Resource Recovery Facility (RRF) in Dickerson has received the 1998 Gold Award for Excellence in Municipal Solid Waste Management from the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA). Presented in the Waste-to-Energy category, the award recognized the RRF as a clean, up-to-date, high-tech facility that operates with a high degree of efficiency.
SWANA's Municipal Solid Waste Management Awards Program recognizes facilities and systems that have achieved the highest levels of success in providing environmentally and economically sound municipal solid waste management to the community.
"Again, the County's RRF has been nationally recognized as an outstanding solid waste facility," said Robert Merryman, deputy director of the Department of Public Works and transportation. "This award also acknowledges the cooperation of our contractor, Ogden Martin, working with County staff Art Balmer and Jim Reynolds to provide environmental and economic excellence."
This is the third national award earned by the RRF in the past 18 months. In spring 1997, the National Capital Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) selected the facility as the Outstanding Civil Engineering Project of the year. Last April, the RRF received a Grand Prize in the Excellence in engineering awards program sponsored by the American Academy of Environmental Engineers.
Jim Reynolds, manager of the RRF program for the County's Division of Solid Waste Services, will accept the award at Wastecon, SWANA's 36th Annual International Solid Waste Expo, to be held in Charlotte, NC, on October 29.
