COUNTY PLANS OPEN HOUSE
FOR "AMERICA RECYCLES DAY";
SCHOOL PROGRAMS SET
FOR FOLLOWING WEEK

In an effort to promote recycling and encourage a renewed commitment by residents to recycle and buy recycled goods, the Montgomery County Division of Solid Waste Services is hosting an Open House at the Recycling Center on "America Recycles Day" (ARD), November 15, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Residents can learn what happens to the recyclables they put out for collection, pledge to continue and increase recycling efforts, and enter local and national drawings for various environmental prizes.

By sponsoring the Open House, Montgomery County joins recycling processors and manufacturers throughout the state in observing ARD. Residents who complete the ARD pledge cards become eligible for local prizes, including a trip for four to an environmental camp in the Virgin Islands, a bicycle and a mulching mower. National prizes are an American Green Dream Home and a family trip to Disney World for entrants under 18 years of age.

"America Recycles Day" was organized in 1997 to raise awareness of recycling around the country, to encourage more people to anticipate in recycling and to ask people to pledge to recycle and buy products with recycled content.

Facilities at the Recycling Center are handicapped accessible. The center is located at Rte. 355 and Shady Grove Rd. (use the Shady Grove Rd. entrance).

School Programs

Students at 12 elementary schools throughout the county will be educated and entertained about recycling through the interactive "Magic of Recycling" show which will be presented November 16 to 20. County Executive Douglas M. Duncan will attend the performance at Forest Knolls Elementary School in Silver Spring on November 19.

For more information on "America Recycles Day" activities, call the Recycling Hotline at 301-590-0046 or visit the Department of Public Works and Transportation's Division of Solid Waste Services website at www.dpwt.com.
