County Honors Ride On's Mural Contest Winners,
Showcases New Transportation Kiosk at White Flint

Honoring what he called "the next generation of commuters," Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan today presented the grand prize in the Ride On Bus System's annual mural contest for sixth graders to students from the Norwood School in Chevy Chase.

Joined by the students, Duncan and other officials also demonstrated the County's new computerized touch-screen kiosk, which the County has installed at White Flint to provide the public with access to information on local transportation information and transit options.

"Today's students are tomorrow's commuters," said Duncan, "and activities such as the Ride On mural contest and the introduction of transportation kiosks help to enlighten young minds to the benefits of transit, in terms of reducing traffic and protecting our environment."

Nearly 300 students from 16 County public and private schools participated in the 13th annual Ride On mural contest, including those from the grand-prize winning Norwood School, according to Ride On General Manager Carolyn Biggins. This year's contest theme was "Clean Air: A Commitment We Share." Second Place was awarded to St. Jane de Chantel School and Third Place went to St. Bernadette School.

Schools whose murals received Honorable Mention included Robert Frost Middle School, Tilden Middle School, Redland Middle School, St. Elizabeth School and Ridgeview Middle School. Other schools participating in the contest were Chevy Chase Elementary School, Forest Oak Middle School, Christ Episcopal School, St. Catherine Laboure School, The Newport School, Our Lady of Lourdes, Connelly School of the Holy Child, and Olney-Adventist School. Selected murals will be on exhibit at White Flint throughout April.

The new transportation kiosk provides users with a direct connection to the County's transportation web site, with up-to-date transit information for Ride On, Metrorail, and MARC, as well as a link to AMTRAK. Users can view maps and schedules for the transit systems and receive updates on traffic incidents and delays, as well as information on parking options and other transportation services.
