Duncan Appoints Army Corps Deputy Chief Genetti to Head
County's Department of Public Works and Transportation

Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan announced today the appointment of Albert J. Genetti, Jr. as the new Director of the County's Department of Public Works and Transportation.

Genetti, comes to the County from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, where he as served most recently as the agency's Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Chief. In that capacity, he has been responsible for a 38,000-person, $12 billion per year military, civil, environmental and water resources design, construction and maintenance agency that operates in more than 1,000 locations in the United States and overseas. Under his direction, the Corps achieved record project completion levels and developed its first-ever, agency-wide strategic plan.

Genetti, 58, who currently resides in Burke, Va., has served in a wide variety of leadership posts over the course of a distinguished 36-year career in the Army and the Army Corps of Engineers. He holds the rank of Major General. A registered professional engineer, Genetti has managed the $6 billion military construction program for the U.S. Department of Defense and developed the first-ever Strategic Strategy for the Army Corps, supporting their new vision.

"It speaks very well for Montgomery County, and for our Department of Public Works and Transportation, that we are able to attract and recruit a leader of Al Genetti's caliber to head this important post," said Duncan. "He is uniquely equipped to lead the department into the next century and will be an outstanding addition to what I already believe is one of the best local government management teams in the nation."

"I'm honored to be appointed to this post and look forward to being a part of the Montgomery County team," said Genetti.

As Director of the County's Department of Public Works and Transportation, Genetti will head a staff of approximately 1,500 and oversee an annual budget of approximately $304 million. The department is comprised of seven divisions: Traffic and Parking Services; Engineering Services; Transit Services; Highway Services; Facilities Services; Solid Waste Services; and Fleet Management Services; and the Office of Project Development.

DPWT's Deputy Director, Robert C. Merryman, has been serving as Acting Director since the retirement last fall of the department's previous director, Graham J. Norton.

"I am extremely grateful to Bob Merryman for the outstanding job he has done in guiding the department over the last several months," said Duncan. "I know that his experience will be an invaluable asset to the new director as he becomes oriented with the position."

Genetti is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, where he earned a B.S. degree. He also earned a master's degree from the University of Illinois. He is a member of the Society of Military Engineers, the Army Engineer Association and the Association of the United States Army.

Genetti's appointment is subject to confirmation by the Montgomery County Council. He is slated to assume the post on June 1 at a salary of $110,000.
