County plans projects
For National Family Volunteer Day
Montgomery County families are invited to spend quality time together and have fun working on volunteer projects as part of the County's celebration of National Family Volunteer Day on November 20 and 21.
Because families are a primary building block of community life and society and have the strength to solve many of America's problems, the Points of Light Foundation has proclaimed November 20, 1999 as National Family Volunteer Day and is calling upon families across the country to work together to perform tasks that will benefit their communities.
"We have extended the celebration of National Family Volunteer Day to include Sunday, November 21, to be as inclusive as possible," said Ann Evans, of the Montgomery County Volunteer and Community Service Center. "We want to give every family the opportunity to participate."
Examples of the Family Volunteer Day projects are visiting with residents of senior housing and nursing home facilities, delivering Thanksgiving baskets of food to the needy, or donating canned food and gifts to be distributed during the holidays.
While National Family Volunteer Day will benefit communities, families will benefit by spending time together and enjoying the rewards of having contributed to their neighborhoods and having fun, which results in an improved quality of life for all. By involving families in building healthier, more vital communities, adults can teach children about caring, community service, and team building.
