Montgomery County Holiday Parade
Set for Silver Spring December 4

The local holiday season will officially kick off with the Montgomery County Holiday Parade which will be held in downtown Silver Spring on December 4 at 10 a.m.

County Executive Douglas M. Duncan will serve as Grand Marshal, with Channel 9 meteorologist Doug Hill serving as master of ceremonies. More than 80 units, highlighted by the University of Maryland Marching Band, will participate. The parade will also include local police and fire-rescue units, scout troops, color guards and local organizations.

A traditional highlight will be Santa Claus in his sleigh, pulled by matched Percheron draft horses.

Popcorn, candy and soft drinks will be sold.

The parade will form on Sligo Avenue, proceed to Georgia, turn north to Wayne Avenue, and go east on Wayne to Cedar Street. The one-mile route is twice as long as last year's.

For more information about the parade, call 301-565-7434.

Volunteers Needed

The Silver Spring Regional Services Center is looking for volunteers to work behind the scenes -- help organize the marching units, assist the crowd with seating, sell popcorn and candy and provide information.

To volunteer, call Alan Petty at 301-565-7441.
