County Commission for Celebration 2000
Recognized by White House,
Unveils New Logo, Invites Corporate Sponsorships
The Montgomery County Commission for Celebration 2000 has been designated as a Millennium Community by the White House Millennium Council.
The Millennium Community program, administered by the White House Millennium Council, "will honor and recognize states and communities for their commitment to undertake local millennium efforts that support the national theme "Honor the Past - Imagine the Future."
Created by President and Mrs. Clinton, the Council cooperates with federal, state and local governments to "encourage a wide variety of projects and events that celebrate our historical and cultural legacy and stimulate fresh thinking about the challenges and opportunities for the 21st century."
The local commission was named a Millennium Community based on a variety of events and programs planned for next year that represent the past, present and future. Included among the planned activities are a Millennium Treasure Hunt, a Salute to Past Generations Gala in April 2000, a Cultural Fair, and a series of Teen Summits to be held around the county. Local Commission events will be placed on the White House Millennium web site www.whitehouse.gov/Initiatives/Millennium/communities.html.
Eighth District Congresswoman Connie Morella presented the official White House designation to County Executive Douglas M. Duncan Monday evening at a Business Reception at Strathmore Arts Center in North Bethesda.
Duncan, Council President Isiah Leggett, and Celebration 2000 Co-Chairman George Fountain, Jr. unveiled the commission's new official logo, which supports its theme of "Treasuring Our Past, Celebrating Our Present, Shaping Our Future."
The Montgomery County Commission for Celebration 2000 was formed to plan and launch a series of celebrations and events to help mark the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the new millennium. Part of its mission is also to celebrate the accomplishments of the County and its citizens during the past century, as well as the present and to set goals for the future.
Celebration 2000 Development Chairman Dawn Alexander also outlined sponsorship opportunities available to local businesses for financial or in-kind donations to support some of the planned projects and programs.
The commission has established five levels of donations, ranging from the Bronze level, $500 - $999, sponsorship mention at one event, to the Title Event level, $25,000 donation for naming rights for an event, participation in planning the event and having the company's logo featured on promotional materials at all events.
