Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Marks Opening
Of New Quince Orchard Community Library

The new Quince Orchard Community Library opened today with an official ribbon cutting and enthusiastic raves from local officials and residents.

Following brief remarks, local officials, including County Executive Douglas M. Duncan, County Council President Mike Subin, Council members Nancy Dacek and Phil Andrews, Department of Public Library Director Harriet Henderson, members of the Montgomery County delegation to Annapolis, and library representatives cut the ribbon, officially opening the facility.

The 17,991-square-foot building, located across from Quince Orchard High School at 15831 Quince Orchard Road, houses a collection of more than 118,500 items for children and adults and offers 20 computer terminals, more than any other public library of its size in the county.

The new library also includes a Children's Discovery Room that provides learning enrichment materials for children from three to eight years of age and an environment that encourages cooperative learning projects under the direction of parents or caregivers. Other features of the facility include a quiet study room and a large meeting room that can be broken down into two smaller rooms. Cindy Counihan is the branch manager.

Detailing some of the features of the new library, Duncan said, "I know the residents of this area appreciate the important role that libraries play in the lives of their children and their community- providing learning centers, meeting places and recreational support.

"Men and mortar may have built this facility," Duncan added, "but it is the spirit and dedication of the community that will shape the character of the Quince Orchard library for years to come."

Public Libraries Director Henderson said, "It's not often that a community gets to add a new library to its complement of services. We're pleased that Montgomery County residents will be able to enjoy the services provided here at Quince Orchard."

The facility was originally scheduled to open last summer, but the project was delayed when the construction company defaulted on its contract with the County just four months prior to the opening. The construction contract was then assumed by a surety company, which completed the project.

"We regret the delays," Henderson, said, "but, we feel the patience of the residents has been rewarded with a first-rate facility."

The Quince Orchard Community Library will be open Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.; Wednesdays, 1 to 8:30 p.m.; and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
