AWARD-WINNING LOCAL AUTHOR TO BE FEATURED
AT FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY PROGRAM
Bethesda resident Alice McDermott, winner of the 1998 National Book Award for Charming Billy, will be featured at a benefit presented by the Friends of the Library on March 9, at 7:30 p.m., at the Fitzgerald Theatre in Rockville.
"A Special Conversation and Evening with Alice McDermott" will include an interview by Dr. Allen Lefcowitz, founder and artistic director of The Writer's Center. Eighth District Congresswomen Connie Morella, a Friends' board member, will host the event.
Admission is $50 per person or $85 per couple and includes a copy of Charming Billy and coffee and dessert. There will also be an opportunity during the evening to have books autographed by Ms. McDermott.
The event will benefit the Montgomery County Department of Public Libraries Born to Read Project, which instructs parents and caregivers to encourage language development through in-library programs that demonstrate songs, simple stories and other activities designed to stimulate language development. The Friends' funding for Born to Read provides educational toys and programming materials that promote the reading experience.
The Friends of the Library also provide Born to Read packets for at-risk families to encourage them to read to their babies and take them to the library.
Cosponsors for the event are the Montgomery County Department of Public Libraries, the City of Rockville, the F. Scott Fitzgerald Literary Conference, Inc. and The Writer's Center.
For reservations or more information, call the Friends of the Library at 301-217-3882.
